Effective August 18, 2026 at 12:01 AM PT, Rushfire Gate will be banned. Players will not be allowed to play the Rushfire Gate in tournaments that are run through the Azuki TCG app, including other formats of the game we may introduce in the future.
Zero/Rushfire was considered BDIF (best deck in format) by many players, but we did not want to preemptively ban a card without concrete evidence. Seeing the overall playrate and winrate from our 1st regional, we are now confident that Zero/Rushfire is a tier 0 deck, and most players are either playing this combo or teching to beat this combo. The data from the regionals made this clear:
The Azuki TCG is still in its infancy stage, and we are bound to miss sometimes, but we are constantly improving our balance framework and testing workflow to improve balance in the future so that these meta warping cards don't happen again [hopefully XD].
The Zero/Rushfire leader and gate combination had the highest playrate and highest presence in top 32 of our 1st regional.
We don't want to have a game where players who want to play competitively and win are forced to only play 1 deck. 3-4 "top" decks is healthy, but 1 singular strong deck is definitely not fun.
We looked at other cards that were too strong in Zero/Rushfire, such as the Blackjade Warlord, but those cards were only exacerbated and enabled by the power of the Rushfire Gate, and we really want to address the root of the problem.
The Rushfire Gate also limits future design. Basically, all the future small 1, 2, or even 3 drops for Fire and Neutral cards will have to be checked against whether they would be busted if they had abilities that would be too strong with rush or sacrifice.
The other fire gate, Ragefire Gate, still performed super well at the Invitational Tournament, before the Rushfire Gate release. We believe that Ragefire is still a very competitive Gate card that synergizes well with fire cards, but it was just overshadowed by the power of the Rushfire Gate. All the same fire card combos are still very strong, so we expect fire to still be a top tier contender after the ban.
Banned cards might get unbanned in the future, but until we believe that all decks have a good way to deal with the extreme early pressure that Rushfire Gate gives, we will not be unbanning this card.
We do very closely monitor the meta, from both quantitative and qualitative standpoints, so moving forward, we will continue to make bans/unbans/erratas as needed. Unlike a live service online game, it's very hard to make "updates" to a physical game, so we want to avoid having to do major bans/erratas.
With this change, we want to see all the new deck possibilities that open up and a wider and more diverse meta for the remainder of set 1 and the other regionals we have planned!
